Riordan, Rick.  The 39 Clues:  Book 1: The Maze of Bones.  146 p.  Scholastic.  2008.  ISBN 978-0-545-09054-4 .Some books are so popular it seems almost silly to write a review about them.  The Maze of Bones, the first book in The 39 Clues series, is one of those books.  It’s so hard to keep this book and the entire series, on the book shelves!

Dan and Amy Cahill, age 11 and 14 respectively, are orphans.  Their much-loved Grandmother just died. They, along with the rest of the famous Cahill clan, have been called to a meeting at her home.  Each family member can inheret $1,000,000, or accept the challenge by not taking the money, and instead go on a world-wide scavenger hunt to find the 39 clues.

It’s a hard decision, but Amy and Dan decide to accept the challenge.  The only problem is that Dan and Amy need an adult chaperone, but they can’t ask their grumpy Aunt.  They ask their self-centered, college-aged Nanny, and she agrees.  Amy and Dan set off on their globe-trotting adventure with their reluctant but soon-to-become-their-biggest supporter- Nanny in tow.

Will they find the clues they need?  Join Amy and Dan as they narrowly esape death, learn some pretty interesting things about their money-hungry relatives, and actually learn some pretty cool real historical information along the way.  Don’t be surprised if you want to go to Paris, France after reading this book!

This is the first book in The 39 Clues series.  Although Rick Riordan has mapped out the outline of the entire series, each book has a different well-known author.  There are also game cards (not in library edition) and a cool website to go along with the book.
